Gordon Murray holds a Chair of Management (Entrepreneurship) at the University of Exeter Business School. Since 1989, he has researched, lectured and consulted internationally in the two related areas of New Technology-based Firms and the international development of the formal and informal Venture Capital Industry. Particular long-term interests include how national venture capital industries have evolved over time; fund performance issues; and in trans-Atlantic and pan-European comparisons of venture capital support for, especially, start-ups and other early stage, technology investments. Dr. Murray is a senior adviser on policy related issues concerning the financing and growth of high potential young firms to the UK government's Enterprise Directorate and is a member of the government's Expert Group on Access to Finance (BERR). He is particularly involved in policy programmes to address the provision of risk capital to early stage, high potential businesses. He has also advised the European Commission on the financing of high growth young firms and was a founder member (2000-2006) of the Professional Chamber of the Enterprise Policy Group (DG Enterprise) as well as having served on the Risk Capital and Gazelle Expert Groups (DGs Enterprise and Research). From 2008, he has been appointed to the newly formed Research Advisory Board of the British Venture Capital Association. He is currently involved in the formal evaluation of the Finnish National Innovation Strategy 2008.
