Executive Vice President, Tapio Koivu has the responsibility over Ventures, the commercialization arm of VTT. This includes commercialization and management of IP portfolio of VTT (approx. 1000 patents plus other assets), and creation of new start-ups and portfolio of VTT’s ownership in 18 start-up companies. He is the chairman of the board of two start-ups and a board member in four other organizations.
Prior to his current responsibilities he was Vice President and founder of VTT’s office in Silicon Valley and Research Fellow at Stanford. Before moving to the U.S., he headed a division called Strategic Technology Development at the VTT Building and Transport with responsibilities covering industry collaboration and technology strategies for partnership level customers.
He holds a Ph.D. in construction management from Tampere University of Technology, Finland, and M.Sc. in Engineering from Helsinki University of Technology.
